We have gained our extensive knowledge about rare First Generation Camaro Parts through racing, working on, restoring and testing vintage Trans Am and factory production cars much like the research and development teams of the '60's.
T/A Performance Restoration's philolosophy is based off of the racing done in the Trans Am glory years, 1966-1972 when production street cars were taken from the assembly line, modified per SCCA rules and put on the track to compete. The motto was "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday"..........
The History of Trans Am:
Conceived by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), the Trans Am series began as a professional racing venue for small sedans. From the first race at Sebring in March 1966 until the end of 1971 the Trans Am Series was intended to be a manufacturer's championship. The popularity of the series grew quickly as more and more manufacturer's came aboard. Within the first year Chevrolet, Ford, Pontiac, Dodge, Mercury and Plymouth supported teams in the series. However, sponsorship was not limited to North American manufacturer's. Alpha Romeo, Datsun, Porsche, British Motor Corporation entered teams as well in the Trans Am, giving the series a unique and international flair as 911's, Giulettas and Datson 510's mixed it up with Camaros, Mustangs, and Cudas. By the end of 1970 season, the world fuel crisis caused most of the major U.S. manufacture's to pull the plug on racing and the series itself. The escalation of gasoline prices caused the sales of muscle cars to sputter. The fans concerned with the impact on their own pocket books lost interest in gas guzzling race cars when fueling their own cars was increasingly more difficult. By 1972 the SCCA , discouraged by the lack of manufactures support, added a driver's championship to the series.
By the end of 1972 what had begun as a manufacturers championship was forced into a driver's series. Although Trans Am continued to evolve , it was never the same. Gone forever were the high horsepower, ground pounding, fender banging days of the Pony Car Wars. Fortunately , most of the cars of the old Pony Car Wars have been preserved and brought back to life and are being vintage raced to this day throughout the United States on many of the original tracks they raced on in the 1960's and 1970's.
